In October 2024, the EGU Council approved ‘Climate Hazard and Risk’ as the 2025-2028 Policy Priority Area due to its relevance to many EGU divisions, current and future policy significance, and the need for information and continued scientific support in the creation of new European legislation and initiatives. 2024 was the warmest year on record, with global average surface temperature reaching 1.55°C above the 1850-1900 average, according to the WMO .

In most of the EGU website, as well as in other communication products, the name Young Scientist will be replaced by Early Career Scientist. In addition, at the General Assembly, the young scientist events and activities , such as the Young Scientist Lounge, will be renamed to reflect the new term.

13 May 2020 The statistics from EGU 2020 clearly demonstrate that EGU members, and many other people around the world, are eager to learn about the latest geoscience research results. By the numbers, the week of Sharing Geoscience Online included: • 701 scientific sessions • 26,219 individual chat registrations from 134 countries • 18,036 abstracts, 63% of which had uploaded presentation materials • An average of 8,730 text chat participants per day on average, with a maximum of 9,930 • A peak of 5,090 participants simultaneously active in chats • A median of 92 participants per chat and a maximum of 796 • 200,400 total messages posted, with a daily average of 40,080 • 6,297 comments made on presentation materials through Friday 8 May • 6 Short Courses, including one live session • 10 livestreamed Union Symposia and Great Debates and 3 virtual press conferences • 44 networking, feedback, or townhall sessions Fortunately, even though Sharing Geoscience Online is over, the scientific discourse can continue.
