Home / Awards & medals / Division Outstanding Young Scientist Awards / 2014 / Roelof Rietbroek
These early career achievements have already had a significant impact on geodesy and on the future of geodetic Earth system research. Rietbroek’s work has generated a number of new insights concerning the understanding of the ocean from geodesy including validating GRACE with ocean bottom pressure sensors, improved understanding of sea level change and ocean mass change at sub-monthly time scales, and the dynamic effects of melting ice-sheets.

In 2016, he completed his PhD at the California Institute of Technology working with Jean-Philippe Avouac and Michael P. Lamb. The poster presented here is the final chapter of his thesis ‘Impact of Climate and Tectonics on the Morphodynamics of Alluvial Piedmonts, Implications for Sediment Transfer and the Stratigraphic Record’.
Home / Media Library / The point of no return
The 'point of no return' for a given emission-reductions policy is given by the point in time where the probability drops below a chosen threshold. The default threshold of two-thirds (67%) is dashed. The unachievable region is bounded by the extreme mitigation scenario: one where we would be able to completely stop greenhouse gas emissions instantly.
Home / Awards & medals / Alfred Wegener Medal & Honorary Membership / 2019 / Michael L. Bender
Bender has pioneered the field of ice core gas-isotope geochemistry and has conducted fundamental work on the biogeochemical cycle of oxygen and on the dating of ice cores. He is a worthy winner of the EGU Alfred Wegener Medal and Honorary Membership. Medal lecture video (YouTube) of the Alfred Wegener Medal given at the EGU General Assembly 2019.

Joanne Elkadi is a PhD student from the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics at the University of Lausanne (Switzerland), working with Professor Frédéric Herman and Professor Georgina King. Her research focusses on developing a more detailed understanding of Quaternary environmental conditions and landscape evolution in mountainous regions, particularly adjacent to glaciers.
Home / Awards & medals / Virtual Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (vOSPP) Awards / 2021 / Jingtao Lai
The awarded presentation at EGU 2021 discussed the linkage between climatic conditions, the basal thermal regime of glaciers, and the spatial patterns of glacial erosion in mountain glaciers. The results show that different climatic conditions produce glaciers with similar equilibrium line altitudes (ELAs) but different patterns of basal thermal regime and glacial erosion, suggesting that there might not be any direct correlation between ELAs and glacial erosion patterns.
