He has also contributed significantly to the analysis of the Greenland ice cores data (as a member of GRIP in particular). He is the first author of the papers extending the climatic record extracted from Antarctica ice cores to more than 300,000 years and of papers discussing rapid climatic changes in ice cores.

For CNR, he leads the landslide hazards and risk assessment unit at the Institute for Geo-Hydrological Hazards Assessment, in Perugia, Italy. After graduating in geology from the University of Perugia in 1983, he received a Ph.D. in geography from the University of Bonn in 2006. From 1985 to 1986 he was visiting scientist at the U.S. geological Survey, Menlo Park, California.

24 November 2016 Heroes of Antarctic exploration have played a crucial role in research that suggests the area of sea ice around Antarctica has barely changed in size in 100 years.
Home / News / Press releases / Climate impact of clouds made from airplane contrails may triple by 2050
Reducing the number of soot particles emitted by aircraft engines decreases the number of ice crystals in contrails, which in turn reduces the climate impact of contrail cirrus. However, “larger reductions than the projected 50% decrease in soot number emissions are needed,” says Burkhardt.
Home / Awards & medals / Plinius Medal / 2017 / Bruno Merz
He has over 108 peer- review publications in leading international journals, which have been cited over 3000 times in ISI. In summary, Professor Bruno Merz has transformed the field of flood risk research and practice through introducing and implementing an integrated framework of combined vulnerability and hazard assessment, which makes him eminently worthy of receiving the Plinius Medal.
