Popular Science Writing: From Blogs to Press Releases

This workshop is part of a three-part Autumn Sci-Comm series which will support Early Career Scientists in developing their science communication skills. Organised by the EGU Early Career Scientist task force on outreach and communication, each online event will feature talks delivered by guest speakers from Luminate Media, a multimedia communications company specialising in science communication and digital experiences. Each talk will be followed by a live Q&A session, allowing for discussion and engagement with the broader community.

Writing about your research for a non-specialist audience can be a daunting task for first-timers. But there is great value in learning to engage different audiences in your work, beyond writing popular science blogs. From grant proposals to conferences, learning to distill your complex thoughts into neat, captivating prose will serve you well throughout your career.

Learning to communicate outside of your expert peer group involves forgetting how academic papers are typically structured, and inverting the narrative – getting quickly to headline information and adding detail from there. By harnessing helpful language tools like metaphors, analogies and comparators, you will learn to frame your writing in a way that makes your research accessible to anyone.

This workshop will last for one hour and conclude with an audience Q&A.

Speakers:

Geoff Marsh Luminate Media - Geoff has more than a decade of experience working with clients such as the BBC, The Guardian, New Scientist and Nature.

Natalia Deane, Luminate Media - Natalia is former Director of Communications and Fundraising at Tree Aid. She currently works as a consultant for grassroots initiatives and established charities, including Medical Aid for Palestinians, Women for Refugee Women, Children Not Numbers, Afghanaid and Tibet Relief Fund.
