Graphic Design for Geoscience on Digital Platforms: An Introduction

This workshop is part of a three-part Autumn Sci-Comm series which will support Early Career Scientists in developing their science communication skills. Organised by the EGU Early Career Scientist task force on outreach and communication, each online event will feature talks delivered by guest speakers from Luminate Media, a multimedia communications company specialising in science communication and digital experiences. Each talk will be followed by a live Q&A session, allowing for discussion and engagement with the broader community.

In an increasingly digital world with diminishing attention spans, graphics are often the easiest and most efficient way to communicate your message. No matter if you are promoting your conference session, a workshop, or an institute event, captivating graphics are a key asset in driving engagement and increasing your visibility as an Early Career Scientist. However, graphic design needs to be done right: a cluttered, hard-to-read graphic can also be the easiest way to disengage your audience.

In this workshop you will learn how to create engaging and accessible graphics to promote your research and events. It will cover the basic principles of graphic design for geoscience ECS, from how to choose the right fonts and colour combinations, to where to find copyright-free assets to add visual panache to your designs.

Participants can follow along and experiment with their designs using the free online tool, Canva.

This workshop will last for one hour and conclude with an audience Q&A.
