The 2011 Outstanding Student Poster (OSP) Award is awarded to Johannes J. Fürst for the poster/PICO entitled:

Effect of fast dynamics on the centennial mass loss of the Greenland Ice Sheet (Fürst, j. J.; Goelzer, H.; Rybak, O.; Huybrechts, P.)

Johannes J. Fürst is a PhD student within the Ice and Climate Group at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel supervised by Prof. Philippe Huybrechts. Until recently he participated in the NICE Marie Curie Research and Training Network. His PhD project is linked to The European ice2sea science project that aims for improved centennial projections of the cryospheric contribution to global sea-level rise. In detail, he investigates the dynamic response of the Greenland ice sheet to future climate change with special focus on processes at the ice margin that possibly trigger instant inland acceleration. On his poster presentation he examined differences in inland stress transmission on Greenland when accounting for horizontal coupling of the ice flow field. Results indicate that such dynamic coupling and the resultant faster inland stress transmission do not trigger a self-accelerated ice sheet destabilisation but rather dampen the total mass loss.
