The 2016 Outstanding Student Poster and PICO (OSPP) Award is awarded to Ido Sirota for the poster/PICO entitled:

Seasonal variations of halite saturation in the Dead Sea (Sirota, I.; Arnon, A.; Lensky, N.)

Ido Sirota is a M.Sc. student working in the Geological Survey of Israel and in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. His thesis focuses in understanding the interrelations between limnological conditions and halite precipitation in the Dead Sea, in order to reconstruct environmental conditions of depositional environments of halite deposits. The presented poster displayed, for the first time, the spatiotemporal variations of the empirical degree of halite saturation of the Dead Sea brine by using new innovative methods. The results show the control of temperature variations upon variations in the empirical degree of halite saturation. Thus, on the annual cycle variations in the water balance have minor effect upon halite precipitation. Next step of the research is investigation of the spatiotemporal variations of halite strata formation as a response to the variations in the degree of halite saturation.
