I am a PhD student at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) in the transport meteorology team. My main research interest is the impact of propagating and breaking mountain waves on high-flying aircraft. The work presented at EGU2018 focuses on the analysis of the generation and predictability of a strong turbulence event encountered by the DLR research aircraft HALO. For this study I used a diverse data set consisting of turbulence-resolving in situ aircraft measurements, European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) and Graphical Turbulence Guidance Tool (GTG) forecasts as well as 3D idealized EULAG simulations. The awarded poster presentation reveals new insight in the amplification of turbulence due to super-position of two adjacent vertically propagating mountain waves.
