The 2019 Outstanding Student Poster and PICO (OSPP) Award is awarded to Hans Jørgen Kjøll for the poster/PICO entitled:

Deep section of a Neoproterozoic fossil magma rich rifted margin exposed (Kjøll, H. J.; Andersen, T. B.; Galland, O.; Corfu, F.; Labrousse, L.; Tegner, C.; Planke, S.)

Hans Jørgen Kjøll works with a fossil analogue of a magma-rich rifted margin preserved in the Scandinavian Caledonides and recently defended his Ph.D. at the Center for Earth Evolution and Dynamics at the University of Oslo, Norway. By studying this fossil analogue by the means of geochronology, metamorphic/igneous petrology and structural geology Hans Jørgen tries to get a better understanding of the processes and dynamics of the deep parts of volcanic rift systems. At EGU 2019 he presented some of the main results of his Ph.D., including new depositional age constraints for a Neoproterozoic sedimentary succession and calculations of strain imposed on these rocks by an intruding mafic dyke swarm during the emplacement of a Large Igneous Province in the Neoproterozoic, which eventually caused continental break-up.
