The 2019 Outstanding Student Poster and PICO (OSPP) Award is awarded to Yvonne Smit for the poster/PICO entitled:

Prediction of beach surface moisture with ModFlow modeled groundwater fluctuations for the purpose of aeolian sand transport (Smit, Y.; Sutanudjaja, E.; Donker, J.; Ruessink, G.)

Yvonne Smit is a PhD student at the Department of Physical Geography of the Utrecht University (The Netherlands). Her research focuses on beach surface moisture and how this parameter influences coastal dune growth. In the awarded poster she presented the final results of her scientific work. It shows the relationship between tidal oscillations, beach groundwater fluctuations and surface moisture content. Subsequently, a model is presented that can predict surface moisture content over time and the results show an estimation of how surface moisture can limit natural dune growth by the wind. The relevance of this research is to protect low-lying areas, like The Netherlands, from sea level rise.
