Bryan Marinelli is a PhD candidate in the Water Systems and Global Change Group at Wageningen University & Research. He is researching groundwater sustainability, aimed at quantifying the environmentally safe operating spaces for global groundwater use and the environmental impacts of unsustainable groundwater abstractions.
Under the supervision of Inge de Graaf, Bryan has calculated global violations of environmentally critical groundwater discharge over the historic period 1960-2010. His work determined thresholds of critical groundwater contributions to streamflow using two different approaches. It then compared violations of these thresholds, when groundwater abstractions caused fluxes to drop below the critical levels. The findings from his research will aid in the development of a dynamic water allocation scheme that will ultimately be integrated in a global-scale model.
