‘Picture A Scientist’ screening extended!

28 April 2021

Due to popular request, and as a thank you to all vEGU21 participants for their patience earlier this week, EGU has extended the viewing license of ‘Picture A Scientist’! This award-winning film chronicles the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for female scientists and offers fresh perspectives on how to make science more diverse, equitable, and open to all.

EGU President Helen Glaves, EGU Programme Committee Chair Peter van der Beek, and Claudia Jesus-Rydin, chair of EGU’s Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Working Group, are pleased to pair the new screening window with the release of the recording of Monday’s Great Debate, Challenging discrimination in the geosciences: amplifying unheard voices, which vEGU21 meeting attendees can now view when logged in to the meeting platform. Glaves and Jesus-Rydin, in addition to EGU Communications Officer Hazel Gibson, chaired this debate.

“We heard from many meeting participants that they were disappointed at not having the chance last week to watch this movie, and also that it was so impactful for some that they’d like to see it again,” says Glaves. “Arranging for an additional three days of viewing is a small gesture of thanks to all vEGU21 participants for their understanding and patience earlier in the week, and also a great way to continue to raise awareness of these important issues within our community.”

More than 800 participants viewed the movie during the first screening window, says van der Beek, and he hopes many more of the meeting’s 16,000 attendees will do the same later this week. “The more people who are able to watch this incisive movie, the more open the conversations will be about discrimination in the Earth, planetary, and space sciences, as well as other scientific fields,” he says.

The new screening window will begin at 9:00 CEST on Thursday, 29 April and extend until 9:00 CEST on Sunday, 2 May. During this time, the link will be available on the vEGU21 platform.
