EGU General Assembly 2019 Media Advisory 2 – Meeting programme online, provisional press conferences Press release 20 February 2019 The programme for the 2019 General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) is now online. Among over 1000 sessions, it features a Union symposium on climate tipping points, debates on both the safe operating space for the planet and on open access publishing (Plan S), and a session on science, politics and European (dis)integration featuring Mario Monti. In this year’s press conferences, journalists can find out where scientists are planning to drill for the oldest ice on Earth, what the latest research on plastic pollution is, and much more. EGU Galileo Conference: Perturbations of Earth surface dynamics caused by extreme events 20 February 2019 The second EGU Galileo Conference of 2019 will bring together scientists studying a range of rare or extreme events and their broader impacts on Earth surface processes, biogeochemical cycles and human systems. EGU Louis Agassiz Medal renamed to honour Julia and Johannes Weertman 12 February 2019 The EGU Cryospheric Sciences Division medal, awarded to individuals in recognition of their outstanding scientific contributions to the study of the cryosphere on Earth or elsewhere in the solar system, has changed its name to the Julia and Johannes Weertman Medal. This change aims to highlight the Weertmans joint contribution to the development of the field, both on educational levels as well as basic research. Read more
EGU’s response to potential changes to the European Research Council 11 February 2019 A scheduled re-organisation of the European Commission’s Research and Innovation Directorate General has raised concerns about its potential impact on the European Research Council (ERC). The EGU strongly supports the unique ability that the ERC currently has to respond directly and independently to the needs of the scientific community. Read more
