Solar activity (e.g. coronal mass ejections, solar flares, solar energetic particle events) and the response of the near-Earth space environment to these solar phenomena are studied on a wide-range of temporal and spatial scales. Data analysis and interpretation of space-borne and ground-based data, as well as theoretical studies and different modelling techniques are used to better our understanding of how our local star defines the neighbourhood that we live in.

Candidates should have completed a PhD degree in Earth Sciences in the broad domain of structural geology and/or tectonics preferentially with post-doctoral, teaching and field experience.
Home / Awards & medals / Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Awards / 2019 / Christian Zeeden
The application of his statistical tools on data of Quaternary loess-palaeosol sequences in Europe and Central Asia is his most recent research field and allows for the evaluation of patterns, timing and rates of dust accumulation, soil formation, and landscape evolution.

Home / Awards & medals / Augustus Love Medal / 2014 / Shun-Ichiro Karato
The recently published synthesis Deformation of Earth Materials demonstrates the breadth of Karato’s contributions to our understanding of the mechanical behaviour of geological materials and the implications for geodynamics. Karato is a giant in the field of mantle dynamics and structure including particularly the measurement of mineral properties in the laboratory.
