Home / Outreach / Newsletter / GeoQ #11
More recently, some 74,000 years ago, the Toba super-eruption in the island of Sumatra, Indonesia, resulted in a noticeable decrease – even if short-lived – in global average temperatures. Given the importance of local events with global consequences in the geosciences, we are dedicating the September 2014 issue of the quarterly newsletter of the European Geosciences Union (now published online ) to this theme.

Teachers are also invited, on a voluntary basis, to present unofficial program activities that they may have developed with their pupils during the “Teaching resources at School: Natural Hazards, Human Impact and Earth” poster session, which is an integral part of the GIFT workshop. Teachers and educators from Europe and around the world can apply to participate in GIFT by filling in an online application form, to open in October. Successful teachers receive a partial travel and accommodation stipend to attend the workshop, and will be notified of the results of their application in mid-December.
Home / Awards & medals / Division Outstanding Young Scientist Awards / 2016 / Ali Mohammadi
In the last eight years, Ali has worked on energy use efficiency in agriculture, greenhouse gas emissions and mitigation potentials. He has collaborated on several research projects on Iranian agronomic systems aiming for the enhancement of energy productivity via efficient use of energy on field operations and energy-intensive inputs, and the utilisation of crop residues for bioenergy generation.
Home / Awards & medals / Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Awards / 2024 / Anirudh Prabhu
By bridging multiple scientific disciplines, he tackles complex questions and delivers innovative insights. Prabhu has made remarkable contributions in the development and application of informatics methods, particularly in dealing with small, sparse, and heterogeneous datasets prevalent in Earth and planetary science. His expertise in machine learning and data analysis has led him to discover patterns and create valuable knowledge, greatly enhancing our understanding of complex systems.
Home / Awards & medals / Young Scientist Outstanding Poster Paper (YSOPP) Awards / 2008 / Dominika Pradzynska
Dominika Pradzynska is currently PhD researcher, within Mountain Risks Marie Curie Research Network, at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Her research focuses on the analyses of short- and long-term behavior of mass movements. The main objective of her research is to improve understanding of the role of the preferential flow in landslide initiation and to include this knowledge in hazard and risk mapping on a large spatial scale.

A new research study, published in the scientific journal The Cryosphere by Swiss scientists, shows that large parts of the Swiss Alps could lose up to 70% of snow cover by 2100. However, if humans manage to control greenhouse gas emissions and limit global warming, only about 30% of snow cover will be lost.

The EGU Election Autumn 2015 for the next Union President and General Secretary was closed on 30 November 2015. We would like to thank each of the candidates for their initiative in standing for the election. We also sincerely thank all those EGU members who used their voting right. Active participation in elections ensures continuation of the well-established bottom-up structure of our Union! In total, 2050 EGU members voted in this election.
Home / Awards & medals / Virtual Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (vOSPP) Awards / 2021 / Giulia Mazzotti
Her research focuses on snow-vegetation interactions, addressing both the development of observational techniques and improved representation of these processes in land surface models. The vPICO presented at EGU 2021 showcased the use of meter-scale forest snow modelling to bridge the gap between detailed observations of small-scale process variability and intermediate-resolution model applications.

The concept of the PWS is to organise annual courses in different polar locations, which should rotate every year. Each of these locations is in the arctic but offers slightly different perspectives which helps to get deeper knowledge of arctic environments.
