Philip Minderhoud is a former PhD candidate at Utrecht University (The Netherlands) working on subsidence in deltaic areas, with a specific focus on the Mekong delta in Vietnam. For his PhD research, he studied delta subsidence by integrating data and methods from various scientific disciplines, including geology, hydrogeology, geotechnical engineering and remote sensing. The poster presented at EGU 2018 presents the relation between land use, land-use history and present-day subsidence rates in the Mekong delta. Highest subsidence rates were found for land-use classes in which natural conditions were most altered by human activities, revealing the indirect, causal relationship between land use and land-use history with subsidence rates in the Mekong delta.
Presently, Philip is working as a Postdoc within the ‘Water, Climate and Future Deltas’ research focus area of Utrecht University focusing on developing pathways to a sustainable future for subsiding deltas impacted by climate change and high rates of relative sea level rise.
