The 2022 Outstanding Student and PhD candidate Presentation (OSPP) Award is awarded to Svenja Hoffmeister for the poster/PICO entitled:

Combining field survey and time series data to learn about plant water usage in a South African agroforestry system (Hoffmeister, S.; Hassler, S. K.; Kestel, F.; Maier, R.; Zehe, E.)

Svenja Hoffmeister is a PhD student at the Institute for Water and River Basin Management at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Germany.

Her research focuses on understanding the water usage of tree and crop species in agroforestry systems. The competition over water resources between them can reduce the productivity of agricultural fields in water-limited regions. Combining different methodologies such as soil characterisation and the analysis of soil water monitoring (i.e. volumetric soil water content and matric potential) and modelling, she aims at understanding hydrological niches in these systems.

One example of using different methods was given in her EGU 2022 talk “Combining field survey and time series data to learn about plant water usage in a South African agroforestry system” where she presented results from a South African agroforestry site.
