DEADLINE APPROACHING Applications open for the EGU General Assembly Mentoring Programme 23 January 2019 For the third year in a row, the EGU is offering a mentoring programme for novice conference attendees, students, and early career scientists at its annual General Assembly. The programme aims to facilitate new connections that may lead to long-term professional relationships within the Earth, planetary and space science communities. We especially encourage potential mentors to sign up and share their expertise with first-timers at the General Assembly. The deadline for applications is 31 January. Read more
Illustrator and sculptor will be artists in residence at the EGU General Assembly 2019 17 January 2019 Morgane Merlin, an environmental science PhD student and visual artist based in Alberta, Canada, and Giorgo Skretis, a visual artist and musician based in Chania, Greece, are the artists selected for a residency at the next EGU General Assembly. The meeting is taking place on 7–12 April 2019 in Vienna, Austria. Read more
Submit your images to the EGU Imaggeo Photo Competition 15 January 2019 The tenth annual EGU photo competition opens on 15 January. Up until 15 February, every participant pre-registered for the General Assembly can submit up to three original photos and one moving image on any broad theme related to the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. Simply upload your photos to imaggeo and choose the option to include them in the photo contest. Read more

EGU establishes new award for geoscience outreach and engagement 19 December 2018 The Katia and Maurice Krafft Award is the newest addition to the EGU awards and medals portfolio. The award aims to recognise researchers who have developed and implemented innovative and inclusive methods for engaging with and communicating a geoscience topic or event with a diverse audience. EGU funds over 20 training schools and conferences in 2019 18 December 2018 The EGU is contributing EUR 132,000 towards the organisation of geoscience conferences and training schools by EGU members in 2019. Read more
EGU Galileo Conference programme: call for proposals 4 December 2018 The EGU is now accepting proposals for Galileo Conferences, which aim to address well-focused cutting-edge topics at the frontier of geosciences research. The conferences are informal: the state-of-the-art is outlined in keynote talks designed to trigger in-depth discussion of important aspects of the conference topic. EGU members can propose to organise a Galileo Conference and apply for funding by the end of February 2019. Read more

Mobile-friendly websites and full-text html papers for EGU journals 22 November 2018 Copernicus Publications, who manage EGU publications, are rolling out new updates for EGU journals aimed at improving the user experience, particularly for those accessing the journal websites on a mobile device. ESurf, TC and CP have now published their first papers in full-text html, with other EGU journals following suit over the next few weeks. The HTML format makes it easier for search engines to find content on EGU journals. Importantly, it also means papers can easily be read on mobile devices since the content of the websites is responsive, adapting to the size of the screen. Read more
Policy brief: increasing collaboration between geoscience, policy and industry 16 November 2018 In this policy brief, the EGU together with the European Federation of Geologists (EFG), highlight the need for more effective collaboration between geoscience, policy and industry to meet Europe’s most pressing economic, social and environmental challenges. The document also outlines steps that can be taken to enhance collaboration between these groups, including improving science communication, creating more opportunities to network and interact, and promoting interdisciplinarity. More time for all presentation types in the new EGU General Assembly schedule 14 November 2018 To provide a better experience for all attendees at its General Assembly, the EGU is making changes to the schedule of its largest annual meeting. The new schedule offers more time for all presentation types by featuring posters, orals and PICOs throughout the day, and includes a dedicated networking slot. Read more
EGU establishes Working Group on Diversity and Equality 12 November 2018 The EGU recognises the value of diversity in particular in terms of geographical, gender, scientific disciplines and age balance. Since its creation, the Union has had a genuine and continuous interest in ensuring fair treatment within its community. In Autumn 2018, the EGU Council established the creation of the EGU Working Group on Diversity and Equality, with the aim to promote and support diversity and equality of opportunities in the Earth, planetary and space sciences, with particular focus on EGU activities. Call for abstracts to the EGU General Assembly 2019 now open! 23 October 2018 The EGU General Assembly 2019, taking place in Vienna (Austria) on 7–12 April 2019, will bring together geoscientists from all over the world to one meeting covering all disciplines of the Earth, planetary and space sciences. The deadline for abstract submission is 10 January 2019 or, for those applying for the Roland Schlich travel support, 1 December 2018. Only 2019 EGU members will be able to submit abstracts as first author to the 2019 meeting and, with a few exceptions, only one abstract as first author will be permitted. Read more
