Annales Geophysicae (ANGEO), published through Copernicus Publications, will transition into an interactive journal over the next few weeks. From 2018 on, all new submissions will undergo a two-stage process involving the scientific discussion forum ANGEO Discussions as the first stage and a final revised journal article publication in ANGEO as the second stage. The change means all 16 of EGU’s thematic journals (i.e., all but Advances in Geosciences, EGU’s journal for conference proceedings) will be interactive publications with public peer review.

The EGU is now accepting proposals for Galileo Conferences, which aim to address well-focused cutting-edge topics at the frontier of geosciences research. The conferences are informal: the state-of-the-art is outlined in keynote talks designed to trigger in-depth discussion of important aspects of the conference topic. EGU members can propose to organise a Galileo Conference and apply for funding by the end of February 2018.

The results of the EGU elections for the next EGU President, General Secretary and Division Presidents are now available on the elections page of this website. Alberto Montanari was elected as EGU President, while Håkan Svedhem was reelected General Secretary. Half of the (re)elected EGU Division Presidents are women.

The EGU is launching the third edition of its grant scheme to celebrate and recognise excellent science communication in the Earth, planetary and space sciences. The two applicants who are judged to have the most innovative and effective initiative, will be awarded a grant of €1000 each to help further develop the idea and put it into practice, as well as a free General Assembly registration. The deadline for applications is 15 February.

On 12 November evening, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit the Iraq-Iran border region. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the quake started at 18:18 UTC (21:18 local time), with epicentre at (34.79 N, 45.85 E) and a depth of 24 km. News sources are reporting that the death toll is over 450.

Following a call for proposals this summer, the EGU Topical Events Committee has selected 13 training schools to receive sponsorship from the EGU in 2018. These EGU co-sponsored schools, on topics covering several areas of the geosciences, will receive a combined total of 69,000 EUR in financial support from the Union.

For the second year in a row, the EGU is offering a mentoring programme for novice conference attendees, students, and early career scientists at its annual General Assembly. The programme aims to facilitate new connections that may lead to long-term professional relationships within the Earth, planetary and space science communities. We especially encourage potential mentors to sign up and share their expertise with first-timers at the General Assembly.
