Travelling pollution – East Asian human activities affect air quality in remote tropical forests Press release 31 March 2015 Researchers from the UK and Malaysia have detected a human fingerprint deep in the Borneo rainforest in Southeast Asia. Cold winds blowing from the north carry industrial pollutants from East Asia to the equator, with implications for air quality in the region. Once there, the pollutants can travel higher into the atmosphere and impact the ozone layer. The research is published today in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. Read more

The meeting, taking place on 12–17 April in Vienna, attracts over 12,000 scientists and provides an opportunity for journalists to hear about the latest research in the Earth and space sciences and to talk to scientists from all over the world. 10th EGU Alexander von Humboldt International Conference 9 March 2015 The 2015 Alexander von Humboldt conference will be joined with the EGU Leonardo Conference Series and will focus on Water-Food-Energy River and Society in the Tropics. It is taking place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia from 18–20 November. The deadline for abstract submission is 13 July. The conference will also have an associated Geosciences Information for Teachers (GIFT) workshop, open to local teachers and educators. Read more

Imaggeo Photo Competition 27 January 2015 The sixth annual EGU photo competition opens on 1 February. Up until 1 March, every participant pre-registered for the General Assembly can submit up three original photos and one moving image on any broad theme related to the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. New edition of GeoQ out now! 1 December 2014 The latest, and final, issue of the EGU quarterly newsletter GeoQ is dedicated to The Anthropocene. It includes a report from the Anthropocene Working Group, the International Commission on Stratigraphy body in charge of examining whether humans have impacted the Earth significantly enough to merit defining a new geological epoch, an era of humanity’s own making. This issue also features a contribution from the EGU President about new thinking, data and models for doing geosciences in the Anthropocene. Read more

Highs and lows: height changes in the ice sheets mapped Press release 20 August 2014 Researchers in Germany have used satellite data to map elevation and elevation changes in both Greenland and Antarctica. The new maps are the most complete published to date, from a single satellite mission. The results are published today in The Cryosphere. Read more

Has Antarctic sea ice expansion been overestimated? Press release 22 July 2014 New research suggests that Antarctic sea ice may not be expanding as fast as previously thought. A team of scientists say much of the increase measured for Southern Hemisphere sea ice could be due to a processing error in the satellite data. The findings are published today in The Cryosphere.
