Applications open for EGU Public Engagement Grants 15 November 2017 The EGU is launching the third edition of its grant scheme to celebrate and recognise excellent science communication in the Earth, planetary and space sciences. The two applicants who are judged to have the most innovative and effective initiative, will be awarded a grant of €1000 each to help further develop the idea and put it into practice, as well as a free General Assembly registration. The deadline for applications is 15 February. Read more
Iraq–Iran earthquake: what we know so far 13 November 2017 On 12 November evening, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit the Iraq-Iran border region. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the quake started at 18:18 UTC (21:18 local time), with epicentre at (34.79 N, 45.85 E) and a depth of 24 km. News sources are reporting that the death toll is over 450. Read more
EGU co-sponsoring 13 training schools in 2018 10 November 2017 Following a call for proposals this summer, the EGU Topical Events Committee has selected 13 training schools to receive sponsorship from the EGU in 2018. These EGU co-sponsored schools, on topics covering several areas of the geosciences, will receive a combined total of 69,000 EUR in financial support from the Union. Read more
Applications open for the EGU General Assembly Mentoring Programme 6 November 2017 For the second year in a row, the EGU is offering a mentoring programme for novice conference attendees, students, and early career scientists at its annual General Assembly. The programme aims to facilitate new connections that may lead to long-term professional relationships within the Earth, planetary and space science communities. EGU Publications Committee Chair Hubert H.G. Savenije honoured by AGU 20 July 2017 Hubert H.G. Savenije, Professor of Hydrology at the Delft University of Technology and the Chair of the EGU Publications Committee, has been named as the recipient of the International Award of the American Geophysical Union. This award is given annually to one honoree in recognition “for making an outstanding contribution to furthering the Earth and space sciences and using science for the benefit of society in developing nations.” Read more

EGU journals: celebrations and growth 16 May 2017 The 17 EGU–Copernicus peer-reviewed open-access journals experienced significant growth in 2016. We published over 3300 final-revised papers, corresponding to some 53,500 pages, a growth of about 10% compared to the previous year. These papers were downloaded over 645,000 times. Read more

Thank you for making the EGU 2017 General Assembly a success 3 May 2017 Last week (23–28 April), the EGU had the pleasure to host 14,500 participants at the EGU 2017 General Assembly in Vienna. This was a record-breaking meeting, with close to 17,500 oral, poster and PICO presentations, and over 1000 sessions and side events. For making the meeting a success, the EGU would like to thank all participants, as well as everyone involved in the organisation of the meeting: conveners, members of the EGU Programme Committee, Copernicus Meetings, conference assistants, and ACV and EGU office staff. EGU endorses March for Science 24 March 2017 The European Geosciences Union (EGU) is now an official supporter of the March for Science. This global movement will culminate with a march on Earth Day, April 22, 2017, in Washington DC. On the same day, hundreds of satellite marches will take place around the world, including in Vienna, the day before the EGU General Assembly starts in the Austrian capital. Read more

Editorial malpractice in two EGU journals (SOIL and SE) detected for one editor, others cleared 27 February 2017 EGU and Copernicus Publications recently detected a case of scientific malpractice by a topical editor of two of their journals, SOIL and Solid Earth (SE). EGU, Copernicus and the executive editors of the affected journals took prompt action by informing the community, and the editor has stepped down. We are now making data from editor and referee reports for the editor in question public, as well as for seven more soil scientists who have reviewed for EGU–Copernicus journals. The data reveal only one editor manipulated citations. Read more
