EGU 2018 General Assembly media advisory 3 – Press conference schedule, online registration closing tomorrow Press release 5 March 2018 The schedule of press conferences at the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union (EGU) is now available. It includes presentations on new results from ESA and NASA missions, what’s at risk from coastal hazards, and the 2017 wildfire season, among other topics. The EGU General Assembly also features a Union session on challenges for the geosciences, and debates on low-risk geoengineering and on threats for life on Earth. For the first time this year, there will also be an EGU Public Lecture, held in parallel with the EGU General Assembly. The meeting is taking place on 8–13 April at the Austria Center Vienna and is expected to attract more than 14,000 scientists from around the world. Statement on scientific presentations at the EGU General Assembly 20 February 2018 The European Geosciences Union (EGU) stresses that all scientific presentations at its General Assembly have equal importance, independent of format. There is no distinction regarding the standing, quality or prestige of oral, poster, or PICO presentations. Our different presentation formats offer different ways to present research and obtain feedback. In all cases, a presenter is expected to deliver the main message of the research orally and discuss their results with other participants at the meeting. Read more
Ozone at lower latitudes is not recovering, despite Antarctic ozone hole healing Press release 6 February 2018 The ozone layer – which protects us from harmful ultraviolet radiation – is recovering at the poles, but unexpected decreases in part of the atmosphere may be preventing recovery at lower latitudes, new research has found. The new result, published today in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, finds that the bottom part of the ozone layer at more populated latitudes is not recovering. The cause is currently unknown. Julia Rosen and Vivien Cumming awarded EGU Science Journalism Fellowship Press release 16 January 2018 The European Geosciences Union (EGU) has named journalists Julia Rosen and Vivien Cumming as the winners of its 2018 Science Journalism Fellowship. The support will allow Rosen to travel to the UK to write about the role of soil in the phosphorus crisis, while Cumming will follow scientists in Myanmar to tell the story of carbon in rivers. Up until 15 February (note earlier deadline this year!), every participant pre-registered for the General Assembly can submit up three original photos and one moving image on any broad theme related to the Earth, planetary, and space sciences. EGU journal processing charges to increase slightly in 2018 to compensate for inflation 11 December 2017 From 1 January 2018, the article processing charges (APCs) for all EGU journals will increase by 3%, following an EGU Council decision in October. In addition to covering the costs of the review process, typesetting, web publication and long-term archiving for existing journals, funds generated from the APCs also help support the launch of new EGU journals, allow EGU to offer financial support to authors unable to pay the APCs, and contribute to cover part of the EGU running costs. Annales Geophysicae to become an interactive journal 7 December 2017 Annales Geophysicae (ANGEO), published through Copernicus Publications, will transition into an interactive journal over the next few weeks. From 2018 on, all new submissions will undergo a two-stage process involving the scientific discussion forum ANGEO Discussions as the first stage and a final revised journal article publication in ANGEO as the second stage. The change means all 16 of EGU’s thematic journals (i.e., all but Advances in Geosciences, EGU’s journal for conference proceedings) will be interactive publications with public peer review. EGU Galileo Conference programme: call for proposals 1 December 2017 The EGU is now accepting proposals for Galileo Conferences, which aim to address well-focused cutting-edge topics at the frontier of geosciences research. The conferences are informal: the state-of-the-art is outlined in keynote talks designed to trigger in-depth discussion of important aspects of the conference topic. EGU members can propose to organise a Galileo Conference and apply for funding by the end of February 2018. Read more

Climate changes triggered immigration to America in the 19th century Press release 21 November 2017 From Trump to Heinz, some of America’s most famous family names and brands trace their origins back to Germans who emigrated to the country in the 19th century. Researchers from the University of Freiburg have now found that climate was a major factor in driving migration from Southwest Germany to North America during the 19th century. The results are published today in Climate of the Past, a journal of the European Geosciences Union. Read more

Applications open for EGU Public Engagement Grants 15 November 2017 The EGU is launching the third edition of its grant scheme to celebrate and recognise excellent science communication in the Earth, planetary and space sciences. The two applicants who are judged to have the most innovative and effective initiative, will be awarded a grant of €1000 each to help further develop the idea and put it into practice, as well as a free General Assembly registration. Iraq–Iran earthquake: what we know so far 13 November 2017 On 12 November evening, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit the Iraq-Iran border region. According to the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre, the quake started at 18:18 UTC (21:18 local time), with epicentre at (34.79 N, 45.85 E) and a depth of 24 km. News sources are reporting that the death toll is over 450. Read more
EGU co-sponsoring 13 training schools in 2018 10 November 2017 Following a call for proposals this summer, the EGU Topical Events Committee has selected 13 training schools to receive sponsorship from the EGU in 2018. These EGU co-sponsored schools, on topics covering several areas of the geosciences, will receive a combined total of 69,000 EUR in financial support from the Union. Read more

Deforestation linked to palm oil production is making Indonesia warmer Press release 25 October 2017 In the past decades, large areas of forest in Sumatra, Indonesia have been replaced by cash crops like oil palm and rubber plantations. New research, published in the European Geosciences Union journal Biogeosciences, shows that these changes in land use increase temperatures in the region. The added warming could affect plants and animals and make parts of the country more vulnerable to wildfires. Read more

Study reveals new threat to the ozone layer Press release 12 October 2017 “Ozone depletion is a well-known phenomenon and, thanks to the success of the Montreal Protocol, is widely perceived as a problem solved,” says University of East Anglia’s David Oram. But an international team of researchers, led by Oram, has now found an unexpected, growing danger to the ozone layer from substances not regulated by the treaty. The study is published today in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, a journal of the European Geosciences Union. Read more

EGU Publications Committee Chair Hubert H.G. Savenije honoured by AGU 20 July 2017 Hubert H.G. Savenije, Professor of Hydrology at the Delft University of Technology and the Chair of the EGU Publications Committee, has been named as the recipient of the International Award of the American Geophysical Union. This award is given annually to one honoree in recognition “for making an outstanding contribution to furthering the Earth and space sciences and using science for the benefit of society in developing nations.” Read more
Removing CO2 from the air required to safeguard children’s future Press release 18 July 2017 Reducing greenhouse-gas emissions is not enough to limit global warming to a level that wouldn’t risk young people’s future, according to a new study published in Earth System Dynamics by a team of scientists who say we need negative emissions. Measures such as reforestation could accomplish much of the needed CO2 removal from the atmosphere, but continued high fossil fuel emissions would demand expensive technological solutions to extract CO2 and prevent dangerous warming.
